How much data things use
| Maps and navigation | a few dozen MB a day |
| Messengers: text and photos | 20–50 MB a day |
| Social media with video | ≈ 0.5–1 GB an hour |
| Video calls | ≈ 0.3–0.8 GB an hour |
| Video in standard quality | ≈ 0.7 GB an hour |
| Video in HD | ≈ 2–3 GB an hour |
| Music | ≈ 50–150 MB an hour |
These are averages: real numbers depend on the apps, video quality and phone settings.
How to use less
- Download offline maps and playlists at home over Wi-Fi.
- Turn off video autoplay in social apps.
- Let app updates and photo backups run over Wi-Fi only.
- Turn on data saver — on iPhone it's Low Data Mode.
