Cappadocia: hot-air balloons, cave hotels and a 2–3 day itinerary
Cappadocia means hundreds of hot-air balloons over stone “mushrooms” at sunrise, cave hotels, underground cities and valleys for walking. Here's how to plan the trip so you're sure to see the balloons.

Contents
In short
- How many days: at least two nights, better three. Balloon flights depend on the weather, and a spare morning helps.
- Where to stay: Göreme is in the middle of everything; Uçhisar is quieter, with a view of the castle; Ürgüp is a bigger town with wineries.
- When: April–May and September–October, with mild weather and the best chance of flying.

Getting there
The nearest airport is Nevşehir (NAV), about 40 km and 45–60 minutes from Göreme. Kayseri (ASR) is further, 1.5–2 hours by transfer, but has more flights, including from Istanbul and Antalya. Most hotels arrange transfers from both airports. There are also night buses from Turkey's big cities.
Hot-air balloons: how it works
Balloons take off at sunrise, when the air is calmest. The flight lasts about an hour, and pickup from hotels is while it's still dark. Every morning the aviation authority decides whether flights go ahead: in strong wind, rain, fog or snow all balloons stay on the ground, and you often find out at the last minute. According to public data, in 2024 balloons flew on roughly two-thirds of days.
- Book your flight for the first morning of your trip: if it's cancelled, you can move it to the next one.
- Even without a flight, get up for sunrise: watching the balloons from the viewpoints in Göreme and Uçhisar is free and beautiful.
- In winter flights are cancelled more often because of wind.

What to see
- Göreme Open-Air Museum (UNESCO): cave churches with frescoes.
- Uçhisar Castle: the highest point in the region, with a panorama over the valleys.
- Paşabağ (Monks Valley) and Devrent (Imagination Valley): the best-known “fairy chimneys”.
- Red and Rose valleys: hiking trails, best at sunset.
- Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı underground cities: multi-level cities carved into the rock.
- Ihlara Valley: a canyon with a river and rock-cut churches, further south.

A 2–3 day itinerary
- Day 1: morning balloons (a flight or watching from a viewpoint), Göreme museum and Paşabağ in the day, sunset in the Red Valley.
- Day 2: Derinkuyu underground city and the Ihlara Valley; this is what the “Green Tour” sold by every agency usually looks like.
- Day 3: a spare morning for the balloons, Uçhisar Castle, Ürgüp and the wineries.
Cave hotels
A night in a room carved into the rock is part of the Cappadocia experience. These hotels are cool in summer and cosy in winter, and from the terraces you often see the balloons over breakfast. Book ahead: rooms with a valley view go first.

When to go
Spring and autumn are warm by day and cool in the morning, ideal for balloons and walks. Summer days are hot, but nights are cool. Snowy Cappadocia in winter is gorgeous, but it's cold and flights are cancelled more often. Bring a warm layer in any season: dawn is chilly.

What to book ahead
- Hot-air balloon flight: in season, places sell out a week or two ahead.
- Red and Green tours of the valleys and the underground city.

Staying connected in the valleys
Mobile data works well in Göreme, Uçhisar and Ürgüp, but in deep valleys and canyons the signal can drop. Download an offline map of the region in advance: “Offline maps: download Google Maps and Organic Maps before a trip”. For everything else, a travel eSIM: Turkey starts at $2.99, 5 GB for 30 days is $7.49.
