Dubai Airport in 2026: visa, taxi, metro and mobile data after landing
Dubai is one of the world's easiest airports, but it's still easy to overpay: for the airport taxi, for roaming, for a badly chosen route. Here is how to get into the city cheaply and without stress.

Contents
In short: what to prepare before you land
- A passport valid for 6 more months. Ukrainian and EU citizens need no visa for a short trip.
- Mobile data from the moment you land: roaming in the UAE is very expensive, and without data you can't book a ride or see the route. The easiest way is a travel eSIM installed at home.
- The Careem or Uber app, signed up in advance.
- A bank card: almost everything in Dubai is paid by card, you need very little cash on day one.
UAE visa rules
Ukrainian citizens can stay in the UAE visa-free for up to 30 days: a free stamp at passport control, nothing to arrange in advance. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival. The stay can be extended by 30 days through the immigration service for a fee. EU citizens also enter visa-free.
In Terminal 3 many passengers use the automatic gates, but first-time visitors are usually sent to the officer desks. At peak times the queue can take 20–40 minutes.
Taxi from Dubai Airport: how much
Dubai taxis run on the meter only, there's no haggling and almost no unofficial drivers. The official taxi ranks are right outside arrivals.
- Airport flag fall: from AED 25 (higher than in town, where it starts at AED 5).
- Per km: about AED 2.6.
- Salik: if the route passes a toll gate, the fee is added to the bill automatically.
2026 guide fares: Deira AED 40–60, Downtown and Burj Khalifa AED 60–90, Dubai Marina and JBR AED 110–150. Slightly more at night and in traffic.
The pink taxi (pink roof, female driver) is for women and families with children. Van taxis seat 6–7 and suit groups with luggage. You can pay by card in any taxi; tipping isn't required, people usually round up.

Uber and Careem
Uber and Careem work at the airport and across the city. Through the app you can book a regular Dubai Taxi or a premium car. You see the price up front and pay by card in the app. At the airport app prices are close to the meter, so there's no big saving, but you don't have to explain the address. The app shows the pickup point on the map.
The metro from the airport: the cheapest option
The Red Line has stations right at Terminals 1 and 3. It's 20–30 minutes to the centre and a few dirhams per ride (usually AED 5–8 depending on zones). You pay with a Nol card sold at station machines and counters; the silver card costs AED 25 including AED 19 of credit.
- Luggage is limited to two pieces: one large suitcase and one carry-on.
- The first carriage is Gold Class (pricier), and there's a carriage for women and children.
- No eating or drinking on the metro, the fine is real.
- The metro runs roughly 5 am to midnight, later on Fridays and starting later on Sundays. Check the timetable if you land at night.
The metro also reaches the Marina and JBR, but it takes about an hour with a tram change. With two big suitcases a taxi is easier.

Landing in Sharjah instead
Low-cost airlines often fly to Sharjah (SHJ), the neighbouring emirate. Dubai is 30–60 minutes away depending on traffic, and a taxi costs noticeably more than from DXB to the centre. Compare prices in Careem or Uber and allow time for evening traffic on the Sharjah to Dubai road.
Mobile data and WhatsApp calls
The UAE is outside EU "roam like at home" and one of the most expensive roaming zones for European and Ukrainian SIMs. There's free Wi-Fi at the airport, but it won't help in a taxi, on the metro or in the street.
WhatsApp and FaceTime voice and video calls are blocked on local networks; messages and voice notes work. If data does not work after landing, see “Phone data not working abroad? 9 steps that fix it”.
A travel eSIM installs at home, and after landing you're online on du with 5G. UAE from $3.49, 5 GB for 30 days $10.99, a week of unlimited $27.99. Your main SIM stays in the phone for bank texts. How to install: the installation guide. Planning the first days? See .
