Internet in Egypt for tourists: hotel Wi-Fi, a local SIM or an eSIM

Mykyta DzhusMykyta Dzhus · Updated 2026-10-20 · 2 min read · eSIM & mobile data

Egypt is one of the most popular holiday destinations, but internet there isn't straightforward: hotel Wi-Fi often only works in the lobby, and a local SIM means queuing with your passport. Here are the three options and who each one suits.

Hotel Wi-Fi

Most hotels in Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh have Wi-Fi, but quality varies a lot: it is often stable only in the lobby and by the pool, the signal in the room is weak, and some hotels charge for fast access. That's enough for messages and e-mail, but not for video calls, navigation on excursions or taxis. Plan on having no Wi-Fi outside the hotel.

A local SIM card

Egypt has four operators: Vodafone, Orange, e& (formerly Etisalat) and WE. Kiosks selling tourist SIMs are at the airports in Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh and Cairo, usually Vodafone and Orange. You need your passport: the SIM is registered to you, together with your phone's IMEI. Tourist packs at the airport usually cost more than in shops in town, and after a night flight the queue at the kiosk can take a while.

A local SIM pays off if you're staying a long time and need a lot of data. The downside is that you have to take out your own SIM for the trip (or carry two physical cards if your phone allows it).

A travel eSIM

An eSIM is bought online and installed at home: after landing your phone connects to the local partner network by itself, with no queues, passport or kiosk hunting. Your home SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts. At Tutu eSIM, Egypt starts at $3.49: 5 GB for 30 days is $10.49, 10 GB is $16.49, and a week of unlimited data is $27.49.

For a typical week in Hurghada (maps, taxis, messengers, photos to social media) 3–5 GB is usually enough; if you watch video or work, take 10 GB or unlimited.

Which to choose

  • A one or two week holiday: an eSIM. Install it at home and stop thinking about internet.
  • A month or more with lots of video: a local SIM from a shop in town may work out cheaper.
  • Only messengers at the hotel: Wi-Fi can do, but on excursions and in taxis you'll be offline.

How much data you need in Egypt

  • 3 GB: a week at the hotel with messengers and maps.
  • 5–10 GB: excursions, taxis, social media and video calls home.
  • Unlimited: if you watch video or share internet with a laptop; a week costs $27.49.

Connection on excursions

In the desert, on a boat out at sea and in remote valleys there may be no coverage at all. Download an offline map of the resort and your route in advance: “Offline maps: download Google Maps and Organic Maps before a trip”. Getting from the airport to your hotel is covered in “Hurghada Airport in 2026: visa, taxi, Uber and how not to overpay”.

Trip tips

  • Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and check that your phone supports eSIM: “Compatible devices”.
  • Download an offline map of the resort: in the desert and on sea trips there may be no coverage at all.
  • Your home operator's roaming in Egypt is charged at separate rates, so turn off “Data Roaming” for your main SIM.
