Where to go in Georgia beyond Tbilisi: 7 places and a one-week route

Mykyta DzhusMykyta Dzhus · Updated 2026-10-20 · 4 min read · Where to go

Tbilisi is a great start, but the real Georgia lies beyond it: mountains under Mount Kazbek, the wine valleys of Kakheti, Svaneti's medieval towers and the sea at Batumi. Here are seven destinations, a one-week route and practical tips.

In short: what you can fit in

  • 3–4 days: Tbilisi, Mtskheta and Kazbegi.
  • A week: add Kakheti with Sighnaghi, and Kutaisi with its caves and canyons.
  • 10 days or more: Svaneti and the sea at Batumi.

Distances are short, but mountain roads are slow: allow more time than your navigation app says.

1. Mtskheta, half an hour from the capital

Georgia's ancient capital lies about 20–25 km from Tbilisi, where the Aragvi and Kura rivers meet. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in the centre and Jvari Monastery on the hill opposite are UNESCO sites, and the view of the rivers from Jvari is one of the most famous in the country. Half a day is enough, and it's easy to combine with the road to Kazbegi.

2. Kazbegi (Stepantsminda): mountains and Gergeti church

About 150 km north along the Georgian Military Road, 2.5–3 hours with stops: Ananuri fortress above the reservoir, the ski resort of Gudauri and the mosaic viewpoint over the gorge. The classic shot is Gergeti Trinity Church at over 2,100 m against 5,000-metre Mount Kazbek. From the village you can walk up to the church (about an hour and a half) or drive.

With an extra day, visit the Truso and Juta valleys: meadows, mineral springs and rocky peaks. You can do it as a day trip, but it's better to stay the night and see the mountains at sunrise.

3. Sighnaghi and Kakheti: wine and the Alazani Valley

About two hours east of Tbilisi. Sighnaghi is a small hilltop town with fortress walls and views over the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus. Nearby is Bodbe Monastery. Kakheti is the main wine region: traditional Georgian wine made in qvevri, clay vessels buried in the ground, is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. Stop at a winery for a tasting, and in autumn you'll catch rtveli, the grape harvest. The region's other town is Telavi. Allow a day or two.

4. Kutaisi: monasteries, caves and canyons

Georgia's third-largest city and a handy gateway to the west: low-cost airlines fly to Kutaisi airport, so you can start your trip here. In town is Bagrati Cathedral, and nearby Gelati Monastery (UNESCO) with medieval mosaics. About 20 km away is Prometheus Cave with lit-up halls, and a little further the Martvili canyon (with a boat ride) and Okatse canyon with a hanging walkway over the drop.

5. Batumi: the sea and the boulevard

The main Black Sea resort: a long boulevard along the beach, modern architecture, the moving “Ali and Nino” sculpture and a botanical garden on the shore. Nearby are Gonio fortress and Mtirala National Park with waterfalls. The beaches are pebbly, and the swimming season runs from late June to September. More in “Batumi: beaches, the boulevard and what to see nearby”.

6. Svaneti: towers and the highest mountains

The town of Mestia and the village of Ushguli with their medieval Svan towers are among the most beautiful places in the Caucasus. Ushguli sits at about 2,100 m at the foot of Shkhara, Georgia's highest mountain, and is considered one of the highest permanently inhabited settlements in Europe. In Mestia, visit the local history museum and climb one of the towers.

It's a long way: from Tbilisi about 450 km and 8–9 hours via Zugdidi, or by plane to Mestia (flights depend on the weather). Go for at least 3 days, and take the road from Mestia to Ushguli with a local driver in a 4x4.

7. Borjomi: mineral water and forest

A spa town in a gorge with a mineral-spring park, where you can taste the famous water straight from the source, and the entrance to Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park. Nearby is the ski resort of Bakuriani, reached from Borjomi by the narrow-gauge “Kukushka” train (check the timetable in advance). A quiet option for walks and forest trails.

A 7–10 day route

  1. Days 1–2: Tbilisi, with Mtskheta in the evening.
  2. Days 3–4: Kazbegi overnight, Ananuri on the way back.
  3. Day 5: Sighnaghi and the Kakheti wineries.
  4. Days 6–7: west to Kutaisi, Prometheus Cave, Martvili canyon.
  5. Days 8–10: Batumi by the sea, or Svaneti via Zugdidi.

If you fly into Kutaisi, do the route in reverse.

When to go

For the mountains (Kazbegi, Svaneti, Truso) the best time is June to September, when roads are open and passes are free of snow. September and October are grape-harvest time in Kakheti. The sea season in Batumi runs from late June to September. In winter Georgia means skiing in Gudauri and Bakuriani, while Tbilisi and the wine regions are lovely all year.

What to book ahead

Links to 12Go, GetYourGuide and Klook are partner links: the price for you is the same, and a small commission helps us run this blog.

Getting around and staying connected

Marshrutkas run between towns, taxis work through the Bolt app in Tbilisi and Batumi, and for the mountains a transfer or a driver for the day is convenient. Coverage is weaker in the mountains, so download offline maps in advance; we explain how in “Offline maps: download Google Maps and Organic Maps before a trip”. For everything else, a travel eSIM: Georgia starts at $2.49, 5 GB for 30 days is $7.99, a week of unlimited is $25.49. Data works right after landing, and your main SIM stays for calls.

FAQ

To see Tbilisi, the Kazbegi mountains, Kakheti and the west, allow at least a week; with Svaneti and the sea, 10 days or more.

How do I get from Tbilisi to Kazbegi?

By marshrutka, taxi or transfer along the Georgian Military Road: about 150 km and 2.5–3 hours with stops.

When is the best time to visit Svaneti?

June to September, when the mountain roads are open and the passes are free of snow.

In Tbilisi, Batumi and other towns, yes, almost everywhere. In the mountains and villages it's better to carry some lari in cash.

I got tired of overpaying for SIM cards that didn't work and of searching for where to go next. So I built this site: travel guides and an eSIM that just works.
