Phuket or Pattaya: where to go in Thailand

Mykyta DzhusMykyta Dzhus · Updated 2026-10-20 · 3 min read · Where to go

Phuket and Pattaya are Thailand's most popular beach destinations, but they're on different seas and very different in mood. Phuket is an island in the Andaman Sea with turquoise water and islands close by; Pattaya is a city on the Gulf of Thailand, two hours from Bangkok.

In short

  • Phuket: for the sea and islands. Clearer water, nicer beaches, trips to Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay. Best season November to April.
  • Pattaya: to combine with Bangkok. Close by, city pace, Koh Larn island nearby, lots of entertainment. The rainy season is milder.

Getting there

Phuket has its own international airport (HKT); from Bangkok it's about an hour and a half by plane. Pattaya is about 1.5–2 hours by road from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport; nearby U-Tapao airport (UTP) also has some international flights.

Phuket: beaches for every taste

  • Patong: the liveliest beach, with Bangla Road for nightlife. Noisy, fun, lots of bars.
  • Kata and Karon: wide beaches, calmer, good for families.
  • Kamala, Surin, Nai Harn: quieter bays for those escaping the crowds.
  • Phuket Old Town: colourful Sino-Portuguese houses, cafés and a night market.
  • The Big Buddha on the hill: a viewpoint over half the island.

Islands around Phuket

The main reason to go to Phuket is the sea trips: the Phi Phi islands with Maya Bay, Phang Nga Bay with rocks rising from the sea (including James Bond Island), and the Racha islands for snorkelling. Similan marine national park is open only in the dry season. In the rainy season some boat trips are cancelled because of waves. Island hopping and boats are covered in detail in “Thai islands in 2026: how to get between them, boat prices, seasons and what not to miss”.

Pattaya: city, islands and entertainment

Pattaya's city beach is more for strolling; for swimming people go to nearby Jomtien or to Koh Larn island: the ferry from Bali Hai pier takes about 45 minutes, and there you'll find clearer water and several beaches. Sights include the wooden Sanctuary of Truth, the Nong Nooch tropical garden, aquariums and water parks. In the evening, life centres on Walking Street.

Pattaya's big plus is how close it is to Bangkok: it's easy to combine a few days in the capital with a week by the sea without internal flights.

Seasons: when to go where

On Phuket (Andaman Sea) the dry season runs roughly from November to April: calm sea, sun, the best visibility for snorkelling. From May to October it's monsoon season: rain, waves, red flags on the beaches, and some island trips are cancelled.

In Pattaya (Gulf of Thailand) the best weather is November to February. There is a rainy season too, from May to October, with the heaviest rain in September–October, but the sea is usually calmer than on the Andaman coast.

Which suits whom

  • Beach and islands in winter: Phuket.
  • A summer trip: more likely Pattaya or the Gulf of Thailand islands.
  • Bangkok plus the sea in one go: Pattaya.
  • Families with children: Kata and Karon on Phuket, or Jomtien in Pattaya.

Getting around

In Thailand, taxis are easiest to book through the Grab and Bolt apps, with the price shown upfront. In Pattaya, songthaews are popular: pickups with benches that run fixed routes for a small fare. On Phuket the distances between beaches are bigger, so you'll need taxis or a rental.

I got tired of overpaying for SIM cards that didn't work and of searching for where to go next. So I built this site: travel guides and an eSIM that just works.
